Exercise or physical activity counseling quality measure

Quality of Patient Care = Patients Who Meet Criterion / (Eligible Population - Exclusions)

Measure purpose: Ensure patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) are counseled on importance of and provided regular exercise regimen recommendations yearly. 

The numerator: Patients counseled on an exercise or physical activity regimen once during the measurement period

*Physical activity may include tai chi, dancing, boxing, yoga, and other non-traditional aerobic or strength training exercises

The denominator: All patients with a diagnosis of PD

Exclusions are removed from the denominator:

  • Patient and/or care partner declines counseling
  • Co-morbid condition that deems the patient unfit to participate in physical activity
  • On date of encounter, patient is not able to participate in counseling, including non-verbal patients, delirious, severely aphasic, severely developmentally delayed, severe visual or hearing impairment and for those patients, no knowledgeable informant available.

Measure calculation example

Dr. Park sees 100 patients between January 1 and December with a diagnosis of PD. This is the denominator. 

Thirty-eight had documentation of counseling on regular exercise regimen in the year.  This is the numerator. 

Quality of patient care = 38/100. Dr. Park has a score of 38% for this measure.
