To identify the rates of occurrence of subarachnoid hemorrhage in large cohort of patients with COVID-19.
Occurrence of subarachnoid hemorrhage has been reported among patients with Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) in case reports.
We analyzed the data from 54 healthcare facilities using the Cerner de-identified Coronavirus disease 2019 dataset. The dataset included patients with an emergency department or inpatient encounter with a discharge diagnoses codes that could be associated to suspicion of or exposure to Coronavirus disease 2019, or confirmed Coronavirus disease 2019.
A total of 12 (0.1%) patients developed subarachnoid hemorrhage among 8,163 patients with Coronavirus disease 2019. A total of 19 (0.1%) patients developed subarachnoid hemorrhage among 19,513 patents without Coronavirus disease 2019. Among all subarachnoid hemorrhage patients, Coronavirus disease 2019 was not associated with discharge to destination other than home or death (relative risk 0.7, 95% confidence interval 0.5-1.1, p=.12).
Subarachnoid hemorrhage was rare in patients with Coronavirus disease 2019. The risk of discharge to destination other than home or death was similar in subarachnoid hemorrhage patients with compared with those without Coronavirus disease 2019 justifying aggressive treatment strategies.
