Investigating Electronic Communication of Neurologists and Patients
Practice, Policy, and Ethics
P8 - Poster Session 8 (8:00 AM-9:00 AM)
7-009

To collect data regarding electronic communication practices and attitudes of patients and healthcare providers in the neurosciences to optimize communication in the healthcare setting.

To investigate the advantages and drawbacks of electronic communication, we analyzed and compared the behaviors and preferences of patients and healthcare providers in neuroscience departments.

In order to assess the behaviors and opinions of clinicians and patients in regard to electronic communication, separate REDCap surveys were administered to all healthcare providers through email and patients through the EPIC scheduling system throughout the Neurosciences Departments at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts. Non-identifiable demographics and clinical variables were collected in the 5-7 minute long survey. Patients expectations and preferences of their clinician’s electronic communication etiquette will be compared with the healthcare providers employed practices.

These surveys provide an specific way of examining experiences and expectations of both neurologic healthcare providers and patients in the use of electronic communications.

This is the first survey of this type to examine the experiences and expectations of neurologists and patients regarding electronic communications in an academic medical center.
