Leadership Training in Neurology: Can we Stem the Tide of Physician Burnout?
Practice, Policy, and Ethics
P8 - Poster Session 8 (8:00 AM-9:00 AM)
7-010
To demonstrate that authentic leadership training for neurology health care professionals focused on self-awareness increases job and career satisfaction.
Neurologists in practice are experiencing unprecedented rates of physician burnout. Leadership training can combat this trend in healthcare by focusing on self-awareness and in turn empowering healthcare professionals in their jobs and careers. Job and career satisfaction for health care workers has been linked to improved patient care and increased satisfaction. We review the evidence of leadership training and discuss how it can be used to fight physician burnout.
A systematic review was performed on the Pubmed database using the following search terms: leadership, mentorship, neurology, training, education, medical, satisfaction, and authenticity. Citations were excluded by the authors based on relevance to the research question.
39 citations were identified using the PubMed search terms. 18 citations were excluded.  Job and career satisfaction are quantitatively and qualitatively increased when programs are offered that focus on effective and mindful leadership strategies in health care professionals. Effective leadership also measurably improves patient outcome scores.
Self-aware and authentic leaders will increase job and career satisfaction for health care providers. Accessible and affordable leadership education is necessary to combat the rising rates of physician burnout.
