Establishment of Normative Data for Thermoregulatory sweat test in Indian Population

1. To establish normative data for Thermoregulatory sweat test (TST) in Indian subjects 2. To correlate the sweat area in TST with age, gender and body mass index (BMI).
TST is a sensitive quality test of sudomotor function that provides important information on the pattern and distribution of sweat loss. However, there is no normative data available for Indian subjects.

The study was done on 50 healthy subjects of age ≥18 years between the April 2017 till September 2019. TST was done in a room with controlled temperature and humidity at the department of Neurology, Christian Medical College and Hospital, Ludhiana. The lower limbs (LL), upper limbs (UL) and feet of participants was dusted with starch iodine powder. Heaters were used to raise the body core temperature. The digital photographs were taken after 45 mins to document the area of sweating. The sweat area was calculated in pixels using histogram and reported in percentage, divided by total area. The pixels of photographs were computed using Photoshop CC 2018.
The mean age (±SD) was 40±15.4 years (range 20-84). The normative value range (2.5 percentile to 97.5 percentile) of sweat area for posterior LL, anterior LL, posterior UL, anterior UL, dorsal and plantar surfaces of feet was 41.8-87.4%, 48.5-90.7%, 50.2-88.7%, 49.0-91.4%, 44.2-78.5% and 51.0-87.0% respectively. The area of sweat was found to be significantly larger in men than women for lower limb (75.6% vs 65.6%, p<0.001), upper limb (80.4% vs 71.6%, p=0.001) and feet (73.1% vs 61.4, p<0.001). The sweat area did not correlate with age and BMI.

Normative TST data has been established for Indian population for the first time.
