Impact of Primary Headache Disorder on Quality of Life Among School Children in Kuwait
Headache
P15 - Poster Session 15 (12:00 PM-1:00 PM)
7-001
We sought to explore the impact of primary headache disorder on the quality of life of schoolchildren.
Primary headaches are a common disorder among children and are increasingly reported in younger populations. They represent a significant source of morbidity in children and can majorly affect their quality of life and academic achievement.
We conducted a cross-sectional study whereby a questionnaire concerning the frequency, nature, and impact of primary headaches on the quality of life were completed by school children (n = 1091). We randomly selected schools located in two governorates in Kuwait: AlFarwaneya (the largest) and Hawalli (urban location).

Our study population consisted of 422 boys (38.68%) and 669 girls (61.32%). The mean age of the participants was 11.5 +/- 2.11 years. Overall, 929 students reported having a headache at least once in their lifetime, whereas 852 students had at least one episode in the past year. Within the past month, the impact of the headache on children was variable. Almost half of students were occasionally afraid of having an episode (43.5%), while 8.1% were constantly afraid. Of those reporting a headache, 5.7% were constantly prohibited by their parents to engage in activities due to their headaches. Difficulties in concentrations were reported as never (10.2%), sometimes (39.1%), often (24.8%), and always (26%). The majority of students reported “feeling sad” ranging in frequency from sometimes to always. Of importance, most of students struggled to cope with their headaches, whereas 22.4% were never able to cope. In addition, 19.4% of students reported not wanting others to notice their headache.

Primary headache disorder can have a significant impact on the quality of life in children. It can affect their engagement in activities and academic achievement. Implementing strategies to properly manage schoolchildren with primary headaches can have profound effects on their quality of life.
