Learning Objectives Participants should have greater familiarity with the properties of currently available AEDs, including the newest agents; how to choose the best first drug; and additional issues for refractory patients. Participants should also understand the role of newer AEDs in the treatment of refractory status epilepticus. The reasoning for early consideration of epilepsy surgery should be better understood, and participants should know how to identify and counsel the best candidates, in whom surgery is likely to be curative. Participants should also gain a better understanding of newer, less invasive approaches to epilepsy surgery.
