Participants should be able to discuss in general terms the effects that ethical norms and legal requirements have on their practice, and in what circumstances individual practice patterns should be determined by ethical norms vs. legal requirements; describe legal issues in the treatment of patients with epilepsy including work and driving restrictions, employment and academic discrimination, and disclosure of risks of epilepsy and epilepsy treatment; apply the concepts of confidentiality and informed consent in the care of adolescents, and compare and contrast the 鈥渕ature minor鈥 and 鈥渆mancipated minor鈥 doctrines; and outline essential steps in identifying and responding to medical errors, and describe when and how to apologize to patients and families when a medical error occurs.
