To study the effectiveness of yoga and meditation in migraine prophylaxis.
Migraine is a commonly diagnosed primary headache in clinical practice. It presents with varying frequency and severity which affects the patients’ quality of life at a personal, social and professional level. Migraine is precipitated by a stressful lifestyle, physical inactivity and sleep irregularities. It is also a risk factor for depression, suicidal tendency and ischemic vascular disease. The treatment of migraine has been mainly pharmacological and only half of migraine patients respond well to medications and upto 10% discontinue medications due to adverse effects. There are very few studies that describe the effect of regular yoga and meditation in migraine prophylaxis in the currently available literature.
The study was conducted in patients attending headache clinic of Neurology department in a single tertiary care centre in rural south Indian population from July 2018 to March 2020. 448 patients who fulfilled the criteria for migraine were instructed to follow a predesigned regular 45-minute yoga and meditation regimen along with medical therapy, and were followed up at 1, 3 and 6 months after the treatment was started. At follow up, they were assessed for frequency of headache, intensity of headache and MIDAS score.
448 patients were advised to follow the predesigned regimen along with the medical therapy. At 1, 3 and 6month follow up, significant reduction in frequency, severity of headache and MIDAS score was observed in patients who followed the yoga and meditation regimen regularly along with medical therapy. 
Regular yoga and meditation regimen along with medical therapy significantly improves the quality of life in migraine patients. Further larger randomised control trials are needed to compare the effects of regular yoga vs pharmacotherapy in migraine prophylaxis.
