Our objective is to assess life quality in patients with epilepsy (PWE)
Epilepsy is a chronic neurological disorder , witch influences significantly the person's social experience, emotional functioning and quality of life (QOL)
54 PWE, aged more than 18 years, attending the neurology department of Habib Bourguiba Hospital, Sfax, Tunisia, were enrolled for the study.
All patients were administered MINI for evaluation of psychiatric co-morbid disorders, and QOLIE 31 questionnaire for the assessment of quality of life.
A total of 54 patients were included, of whom 63% (n =34)were men.
The QOLIE-31 overall score was 48,48 +/- 10,34. The demographic profile was characterized by low level of education, unemployment, and low or middel socio-economic level. The variable that significantly affected QOL was psychiatric comorbidities (p =0.001).
All the subscales (seizure-worry, overall QOL, emotional well-being, energy-fatigue, cognitive functioning, medication effects, and social functioning) were severely affected by the
occurrence of psychiatric disorders. The age of onset of seizures , the duration of seizures and their frequency were not correlated with a deterioration of the QOL in our patients.
QOL is significantly affected in epilepsy patients by the comorbid psychiatric disorders. Social support and treating them may improve outcomes independently.
