Advocacy and leadership curriculum integration in a neurology residency program: A way to combat burnout
Practice, Policy, and Ethics
P9 - Poster Session 9 (12:00 PM-1:00 PM)
7-001

To present preliminary findings regarding neurology resident and faculty satisfaction, resident/faculty-advocacy engagement, and effects on burnout with the implementation of an advocacy and leadership curriculum in the Mercy Health Neurology Residency Program

The current medical milieu puts neurology residents and practicing neurologists at risk for burnout. Physician advocacy has been an effective platform for physicians to make meaningful system change and potentially ease burnout. Even though advocacy has been assimilated in pediatric residency programs, it is not a requirement in all neurology residency programs.

Neurology residents and faculty participated in a survey about prevalence of burnout, experience and training in advocacy, and identified issues important to address in an advocacy and leadership curriculum.

All neurology residents and faculty surveyed stated that they have experienced burnout. There was a lack of initial advocacy experience, but advocacy interest and engagement was high with the implementation of the program. Areas of improvement were identified and presented.

Neurology residents and faculty were supportive of incorporating an advocacy and leadership curriculum, as this is an effective tool that could create meaningful change and help fight burnout. Preliminary results were used to guide curriculum development.
