The Rush Neurology Wellness Initiative: A Three-Part Approach to Burnout

To describe the creation and initial results of Rush Neurology Wellness Initiative (RNWI), a three-part program created in 2018 to address burnout among residents.
The Âé¶¹´«Ã½Ó³»­'s 2016 survey found that 73% of residents had at least one symptom of burnout. This issue is of urgent concern, as burnout poses a threat to personal well-being, harms patient care, and may reduce the future physician workforce over time.
The RNWI consisted of three parts: a lecture series on wellness and burnout, a retreat for the post graduate year two (PGY-2) class, and creation of Wellness Families. We administered an anonymous survey to all 24 Rush neurology residents prior to the implementation of the RNWI in the fall of 2018 and afterwards in the spring of 2019.

Response rate included all 24 residents in the fall and 20 residents in the spring. Overall burnout rate in the fall compared to the spring was 75% and 80%, respectively. More residents felt they could identify the symptoms of burnout from the fall to the spring (65.2% to 81%). When asked if residents felt they had sufficient tools/skills to manage symptoms of burnout, 37.5% of residents said yes in the fall compared to 52.4% in the spring. Twenty-one percent of all residents and 50% of PGY-2 residents said in the fall that they did not feel they had someone they could talk to about burnout; no residents felt this way in the spring.

A  majority of neurology residents in our program had symptoms of burnout at both survey time points, with more residents feeling burnt out in the spring. Burnout reporting may have been due to greater symptom awareness. After implementation of RNWI, more residents felt they had the tools/skills to manage burnout and felt they had someone to talk to about burnout.
