To validate the MoCA-S in elderly and study its usefulness in mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and mild dementia (MD)
The MoCA-S is a brief and useful test to diagnose mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and mild dementia (MD). To date, no Argentine adapted validations of the Spanish version have been published.
399 subjects >60 years (155 healthy elderly controls, 158 MCI and 86 MD) were classified according to neuropsychological evaluation and clinical standard criteria. A local adapted MoCA-S was applied in each group.
The score of the MoCA-S was significantly different between groups (p <0.0001). The MoCA-S correlated with education (r: 0.406 p <0.00001). The sensitivity and specificity of MoCA-S were optimized with score ≥25 (IY=0.55). The sensitivity for MCI was 84.8% and for MD 100% with specificity of 69.7%. Adding a point at the end of the evaluation in patients with <11 years of schooling, increasing the specificity of the test to 81%. The area under the ROC curve was 0.877 (95% CI [0.841-0.914]) in MCI and 0.99 (95% CI [0.99, 1]) in MD.

The MoCA-S reminds an useful test to diagnose MCI and MD and superior to the MMSE in the early stages, in representative transcultural Spanish speakers.
