To determine the functional outcome among stroke survivors with early-onset post stroke seizuresTo determine the functional outcome among stroke survivors with early-onset post stroke seizures
When seizures complicate a stroke, they have a devastating effect on morale and further impair an already compromised quality of life. There are different time-based definitions of early-onset post stroke seizures, however most authors have identified seizures occurring within the 14 days after acute stroke as early-onset, while seizures occurring outside this period are defined as late-onset seizures. There are conflicting data from different studies, giving an unclear effect on functional outcome with paucity of data among Nigerians.
Consecutively consenting adult Nigerians with acute stroke who met the inclusion criteria for the study were prospectively recruited over a period of 12 months. Two cohorts of stroke patients were recruited viz- those with early onset seizures and those without early onset seizures. Information was obtained on the sociodemographic characteristics and stroke risk factors.  Modified ranking scores were obtained in both cohorts at admission and after 3 months.   Patients with early-onset seizures had interictal encephalographic study (EEG) within 72 hours of the first seizure, while all patients had cranial CT scan. Comparison between the two groups were done using appropriate statistical tools.Factors associated with post-stroke seizures were determined using univariate analysis. A p value < 0.05 was considered statistically significant.
Twenty five (25) patients and 50 patients were in the group of patients with early-onset seizures and no early-onset seizures respectively. A cross- analysis of functional outcomes between patients with and without early-onset post stroke seizures showed a non-statistically significant difference between them (p=0.836).

This study showed that there was no significant difference (p=0.836) among patients with or without early-onset post stroke seizures with respect to the poor functional outcome similar to findings from earlier related studies.
